Classes meet daily from 9am to 4pm unless otherwise noted.
LEARNING AND APPLYING THE BASICS
Learn to paint successful outdoor landscapes (en plein air) with award winning pastelist and experienced workshop instructor, Steve Hill, in the beautiful Skagit Valley during the peak of summer!
We will start indoors at Dakota Pastels on Day #1, setting-up our plein air gear and doing two smaller landscape paintings (terrestrial and water) from reference photos provided by Steve. You will learn pastel strokes and techniques that will enable you to simplify complicated details while learning to paint quickly and prepare you to work successfully from live subjects the next two days.
Steve’s techniques of combining Pan Pastels with hard and soft sticks make it easy to understand and cover a lot of ground in a short time. You will also learn a new way of “seeing” like an artist to get fast results. His daily, easy-to follow demos will guide you every step of the way and provide the confidence necessary to paint like a professional.
$395 workshop fee plus recommended pastel supplies. See recommended supplies list on this page.
Note: If you’ve already taken one of Steve’s pastel workshops, you will only need a portable field easel for this workshop.
Create a hands-on understanding of the pastel medium and the ability to create successful paintings. Learn by direct experience and observation from my daily live demos plus experiencing/sharing the work of other students in the class.
A complete recommended list will be sent upon enrollment. Dakota offers a 10% discount on all products purchased throughout the workshop. The Basic Pastel Stroke exercise grids are provided by Dakota and me for the first day. I provide hundreds of landscape reference photos from my travels all over the world but also encourage you to bring your own to paint from after day 1.
You will be able to work successfully on your own using the techniques that will be covered in the workshop, as you develop your own style and techniques. Even experienced pastel artists come away with new skills, as countless testimonials verify. You will be ready for painting outdoors on-site (plein air) as a next step.
