The landscape is an endless fount of color inspiration, yet effective color solutions are only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. Landscape painters routinely modify the colors they see in order to achieve the effects they are after. But how do we know when and how to modify colors? To help guide our color choices in an informed way, painters rely on a color plan or strategy. In this workshop, through a series of guided exercises and small paintings, you’ll learn how to use color strategies to build greater landscape harmony.

• how to increase color unity with the practice of “color grouping” — a narrow set of  color families that define the color overall color key of the painting

• how to create palettes “tuned” to the particular harmony you are after (rather than using the same limited palette for every painting)

• the meaning of a “complete” color strategy. (Hint: relationships like analogous, complementary, etc. are just one small part of a complete color strategy)

• how neutral harmonies help create unified light

• the proper way to use photographic reference

Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. Detailed tips for selecting reference photos for the workshop will be provided before the workshop.

Level: This is not a class for first-time painters (those who have never painted at all); however, it is ideally suited for plein air or studio landscape painters who want to expand their color vocabulary.

Media: Oil; soft pastel
