CONGRATULATIONS, SUMMER QUARTER WINNERS!THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ENTERED. Click here to view the 2020 Spring Quarter winners Judging Statement and Award Comments I was overwhelmed with the quantity and excellent quality of the work submitted to both the Emerging and Established Artists categories. It is heartwarming to see that the medium of pastel is alive and kicking worldwide. It was amazing to see so many ( close to a thousand) talented emerging artists offering a fantastic variation of subject matter. I might add that the sheer quality in this category made it very difficult to whittle it down to the twelve successful artists. In reality every person that submitted their work are in fact winners.
The Established Artists category was equally difficult to reach a final decision as once again quality of work submitted appears to get better and better with each online competition. Once again I congratulate those who did receive an award and thank all of the artists for their fantastic contributions to this annual event.

1ST PLACE: Nori Thorne
A painting showing all the skills of an artist who can pick out colour, light, form and pitch the perfect values from the slightly abstract background to the portrait of the woman loading up her basket. then we come forward to the main event of the lady in the foreground. The skin tones, the gray hair and the folds on the clothing is magnificently observed.
2ND PLACE: Tara Will
A dramatic viewpoint of these sunflowers on a full sheet of paper is stunning and has great balance of value and colour. The juxtaposition of light against dark and the economy of strokes especially in the center flower and the fleshy leaf at the top is masterful.
3RD PLACE: Jeanne Rosier Smith
A magnificent example of painting waves. Each stage of the making of a wave can be observed here from the calm water through to the build up of the swell and finally we are drawn into the crescendo of the crashing wave with all its nuances of colour, shade, swirling foam and translucent light. This takes great imagination and skill.
4TH PLACE: Terri Ford
A painting bursting with fresh and powerful 'brush' marks of the pastel medium. Lots of half hidden focal points to enjoy . the light being cast onto the side of the building down to the tiny shaft of light at the base of the main tree, there is so much for the viewer enjoy.

1ST PLACE: Cindy McBride
A beautiful painting of a girl in profile. The colours and flicks of light that dance around the hair, face and dress all marry well together to make a truly successful painting. 2ND PLACE: Christianna Mikesell-Bidwell
This semi animal portrait is beautifully observed. The mesmerising quality and the indication of possibly the artist reflecting in the eye is masterful.
3RD PLACE: Carol Holland
This is a plein air lesson in confident mark making using a selection of values and colour to observe the new growth and beginnings.
4TH PLACE: Elena Selitsky
This painting really impressed me as it looks like it was painted from life in the studio. The wonderful free and loose treatment of the mark making shows a wealth of confidence in the artist to speak to the viewer. The handling of the flowers is beautifully observed. I love the way the loose gessoed background is left unpainted so as to not interfere with the flowers.
