CONGRATULATIONS, SECOND QUARTER WINNERS!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ENTERED.

Congratulate yourself for entering the show! Putting your work out for public view and possibly critique is a very difficult and brave thing. I commend you all for participating in this process. I was honored to have been chosen to be your juror this quarter and would like you to know that I realize the time and effort that goes into creating the work and entering it into a pastel society show. I’d also like you to know that I very much enjoyed seeing the great variety of subject matter and painting approaches. Please be assured that I put much thought and care into my selections! Keep in mind that my choices are simply my one opinion and point of view. For those whose pieces I did not select this year, please carry on! There were many fine pieces which I could not include in the show!

When I select pieces I’m primarily considering three factors; the use of the materials; how did the artist use the pastels and paper to their best advantage. The craftsmanship; did the artist use drawing skill, value, color, composition, aerial perspective to further their idea. Poetry; did the piece go beyond the materials and craftsmanship to and have a unique voice or story. When a piece has these three factors working in concert, they are most successful and wonderful to view and speak to us on a most human level.

I hope you get inspired and motivated by the show! Happy Painting,

Marla Baggetta PSA, IAPS/MC, OPA

FIRST PLACE Tony Allain: This piece is dramatic and captivating! The quality of light carries and strong composition marries with purposeful and economic mark making. Every mark belongs and serves the whole. I kept coming back to this piece over and over again. It literally haunted me!

SECOND PLACE Glen Maxion: Confident drawing and use of color come together in this playful and energetic piece. A simple scene of people playing at the beach is delightfully orchestrated.

THIRD PLACE Terri Ford: This piece elevates an ordinary industrial structure and street scene into art! The composition arranges large shapes against small ones, large dark shapes against small light ones. The application of pastel is beautiful and consistent throughout. I feel the warmth of the sun and the mood of the day.

FOURTH PLACE Jeannette Stutzman: This piece has something to say from on first look and then draws you in for many surprises. The artist has made sense out of the tangle of foliage, flowers and bees, giving us a new perspective. The overall of the piece is beauty meeting chaos.

FIRST PLACE Megan Veldee: This is a beautifully done portrait, from the drawing, color, mark making, pose and the composition. It is striking and memorable!

FIRST PLACE Barb Grubba: Direct and fresh! The confident and seemingly effortless mark making comes together to make this moments interaction into a dazzling scene.

FIRST PLACE Isla Ferrer: Refined and masterful rendering are definitely evident in this piece but it also speaks to the character and intensity of the cat. For me this makes it much more than good rendering, elevating the piece.

FIRST PLACE Tatsiana Harbacheuskaya: The play of color and direct fresh mark making are perfectly put the play in this windowbox of flowers. It’s composed beautifully too!
