CONGRATULATIONS FIRST QUARTER 2024 WINNERS!
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ENTERED.
Judging Statement and Award Comments Loriann Signori, PSA, IAPS/MC
“A big congratulations to all! It takes a special kind of bravery to step out and enter a major competition. Bravo! Both divisions were filled with accomplished works that made choosing very difficult. Whittling down the awards to only 4 in each division was extremely challenging. Every day I viewed the selections, new works would rise to the top. That said, tomorrow I might see the placements in different order. This is today’s version.
When evaluating the works, I was looking for the pieces that gave new life to a motif. Seen through the artist’s eyes, a simple idea came alive. It doesn’t matter whether landscape, still life, portrait or abstract, the subject was observed in a new way and the artist’s hand and heart were present. The next factor was competence in the fundamentals of design, value, and color. Skilled manipulation of these tools is essential.”

1st Place - Established: Secrets of the Night “It’s true we are viewing an ordinary cat, yet the strong and expressive mark-making, combined with exquisite color and temperature control take over as the subject. That is the recipe for extraordinary! It’s obvious to see the artist’s love of her muse. I could look at this painting every day and see something new.”
2nd Place - Established: Shadow Shade, Sunlight “Absolute discovery in what could be a spartan motif is what makes this painting so fascinating. A haze of small dots intrigues the viewer to explore what could be a simple shadow, but in this artist’s hands it becomes so much more. Oftentimes the painter will focus on “the thing” (in this case a plant) yet that remains secondary to the beautifully activated space below the plant.”
3rd Place - Established: Patters and Pears “What a treasure trove of patterns and shapes to behold! A luscious tension is formed between the exactitude of the ceramics and the joyful play of patterning surrounding them. Reminiscent of Vuillard, the space dances."
4th Place - Established: Last to Leave “This is a painting of true sensitivity: of value, of soft and sharp and most of all - emotion. It’s obvious the artist feels deeply for the motif at hand and therefore brings the humble milkweed into a song of loss while being found.”

1st Place - Emerging: A Winter Day at Port “Such a dynamic synergy is formed when this artist manipulates the tonal range and color palette to such an extent. The motif (harbor in snow) is only a mere vehicle for this exploration while he/she transcends the subject by focusing on these aesthetic considerations. Bravo! This is true beauty.”
2nd Place - Emerging: Momentary Brilliance “Let’s relish the joy of a neutral palette in this beautiful painting. Those dashes of cool cerulean and cobalt steal the show, yet surprisingly still allow the viewer to wander and explore the play of texture and shape."
3rd Place - Emerging: Left Out “A bag of lemons, such a mundane motif, in this artist’s hand has risen due to the marvelous mastery of color. The joyful play of translucence and opacity is heightened by a complementary color scheme. A beauty."
4th Place - Emerging: The Cool Life “While the motif is an animal; the subject is color - magnificent color! It dances between warm and cool and delights the eye at every turn. Bravo!"
