CONGRATULATIONS FIRST QUARTER 2025 WINNERS!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ENTERED.

Judging Statement and Award Comments
Margaret Dyer, IAPS-MC, PSA

Thank you, Craig, April, and the people at Dakota Art Pastels for this opportunity to judge this prestigious exhibition. It has been an honor and a daunting task.
To the artists, let me state first of all that, while I tried very hard to be fair and objective, my choices as a juror do reflect my own biases, as all juried exhibitions reflect their respective jurors’ biases. So if you didn’t get into this show, you can get into the next.

There were many paintings that deserved as much recognition as these that I ultimately chose, but I was limited to a quota: 12 paintings in the Emerging category, 12 paintings in the Established. In selecting paintings, I looked primarily for technical proficiency. I looked for an understanding of composition, sensitive drawing skills, competent draftsmanship, which includes perspective and anatomy. I looked for an understanding of color, value and temperature. I sought an expressive application of the pastel medium.

How did I eliminate paintings, despite their exceptional quality? Was the subject one that I have seen painted a hundred times by other artists? Would I be able to differentiate this artist from that artist style-wise? I was also advised by the Dakota staff if an artist was overqualified to be in the Emerging category, or if a work was painted outside the time limited in the prospectus.
How did I select award winners? I would imagine I was walking through a gallery and choosing which works I would like to take home with me. Could I live with it for the next 10 years? I looked for something in the artist’s work that transcends technical proficiency. I looked for confidence in the work which shows the artist has found (or is finding) his or her “voice.” I looked for mood. Ultimately, I looked for profound individuality.

If you won an award, my heartfelt congratulations to you for your strong and beautiful work. If you did not win an award, that does not mean your work was not worthy of an award. I know you’ve heard it countless times before, but honestly, there are many strong pieces that would have won awards if there had been enough awards to go around. It hurts that I can’t acknowledge all the excellent pieces.
Whether you are an award winner or not, congratulations to all of you for a really beautiful exhibition. It makes me proud to be a pastelist.

ESTABLISHED WINNERS

1st PLACE
Roses, Carnations & Teacup
How I wish I could paint something like this. The delicacy of the china cup, the fragility of the rose petals, the subtlety of the fabric beneath it all–it all requires such discipline and patience, both of which I lack. It’s a masterful still-life.

2nd PLACE
Winter Glow
I suspect I know whose this is, although I can’t be sure because, thank goodness, there was not a visible signature. But this, whose ever it is, deserves an award for its originality, boldness, draftsmanship, sense of color, confidence and energy. It’s an inspiration.

3rd PLACE
Choices
There is a lot of humor here, with the birds and the eggs and the polka-dots. It brings a smile to my face every time I look at it. How often does that happen? It is masterfully handled in every way. Bravo!

4th PLACE
Model at Rest
This unpretentious portrait, a vibrant colorful sketch capturing a young girl, should be a treasured heirloom for generations. Put an ornate frame on it and hang it over the mantel. It’ll look like a Mary Cassatt.

EMERGING WINNERS

1st PLACE
Languor
Sometimes I am compelled by a painting, and if asked why, I might struggle for an answer. Is it the beautiful draftsmanship? Is it the confident handwork of the pastels? Is it the sensitive handling of temperature? Is it the unusual wistful look of the subject. I think maybe it’s all of these. It’s just one of those paintings that made a very strong impression on me.

2nd PLACE
My Ocean View
I know this looks like it was whipped out quickly. But that’s what they said about Turner. To say something this powerful with such economy is a real skill. It is sensitive and powerful.

3rd PLACE
Still Life #2
This is so delicately handled that I can almost smell the waning rose and feel the crunch of its drying leaves. It is a sensitive drawing. And the white background–no, it’s pink and green and blue and yellow, but reads as almost white. This pastel is simply beautiful, and beautifully simple.

4th PLACE
A Quiet Place
I am lost in a magical story land. It’s every child’s fantasy, however old you might be. This artist uses skillful draftsmanship to create a moody world. It strikes such a strong emotional chord, how could I not give it an award.
