EARLY SPRING with Albert Handell Handell demonstrates his pastel painting techniques using watercolor as an under painting on sanded pastel paper. He develops the composition of ‘Early Spring’ using pastel and several reference photographs. The demonstration shows how to paint the beautiful mauves and grays of winter with the introduction of fresh verdant spring greens. He paints and explains the layering of pastel colors and how to paint with various colors of similar values to achieve luminous passages with sharp and ‘sleepy edges’. You are shown how to control vivid colors to add sparkle to the finished painting and much, much more! 105 min

"Handell: Early Spring"
One of Handell's best paintings distilling his loves and insights over last 30 years. Many techniques and preferences discussed which complement my own (i.e., use of charcoal with pastel, using cloth over pastel to limit saturation, differences in cast shadows, distinct personalities of trees, etc.). He once said, "work on what interests you and suggest the rest." He's achieved a delicate balance between what's carefully defined and what's suggested. Good product for you to have.
