Townsend Dry Ground is a block of pumice tinted with pigment and mixed together with a binding formula created to adhere to any paper as a support for pastel or other dry mediums. The surface created is delicate and allows for subtle applications in a pastel painting. The Ground can be used to create a surface on a substrate, as a layering material used over and with pastels, or as a blending material when working the surface. It allows aggressive manipulating of the surface to enhance the adhesion of layers of pastel.
To apply Dry Ground to a paper or board surface: Work horizontal with paper on the floor or table; Apply a light coat and firmly rub ground in to surface with your hands (wear gloves – very abrasive); Apply a second coat and once again rub firmly. This should produce a smooth even application – just dust off the excess and your surface should be ready to go.
